![]() When the American Revolution began in 1765, Washington returned to military service when he reluctantly accepted a position as General and Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. During one of the longest military careers of any president or elected federal official, Washington first fought in the French and Indian Wars of 1754, earning an appointment as commander of the Virginia Regiment. Without the military skills and heroism of George Washington, America might still be a British colony.
